Figurine after Venus of Willendorf
Bronze
6" high with pyramid base.
Pendant after Venus of Haute Garronne
Bronze 2 inches long
Figurine after Venus of Dolni Vestonice
Bronze 3.5 inches long
|
Venus figures like
these were first crafted over 25,000 years ago in ivory, bone, stone and
in fired clay. While the exact use and meaning of these figures
remain controversial, many modern archeologists believe they had major
spiritual significance. They may have been used in rituals of
divination, seeking guidance or simply to commune with the mystery of the
feminine aspect of the Divine.
Today more than ever, I feel our world needs to see the face of
the Goddess. She symbolizes the principals of relationship and inter-dependance, cooperation and receptivity, fertility and nurturing from
which all life flows. Her strength and beauty are mirrored in the
secret heart of every woman.

Sterling Silver earrings for pierced ears after the Venus of Willendorf
$19 per pair
|
Each of the sculptures in my First Adoption Series shows
a woman wearing a pendant like those seen above and left. My reasons
for this were,
first, to place the figures in time, in the paleolithic period and second,
to symbolize the nuturing feminine spirit that must have been key in the
early domestication process.
So many men and women have recognized the figures
on my sculpture and have asked for them to be available, that I went ahead and cast a series
figurines and pendants in bronze or in silver. I personally create a unique patina
for each tiny bronze.

Large Standing Venus figure after the Venus of Willendorf
Bronze 6 inches high with pyramid base.
$115
|
Each of my Venus figures is inspired by an existing
prehistoric artifact. The large standing figurine is after the Venus of
Willendorf. The original artifact was found by Szombathy in 1908 in
a loess deposit near Willendorf, Austria. It was carved in calcarous
stone and bore traces of red ochre paint. |

Pendant after the Venus of Haute Garonne
Bronze 2 inches long. $39
|
My pendant is based upon an original artifact discovered
in 1922 by the archeologist Saint-Perier in the Rideaux cave of
Lespugue (France) in an intact deposit considered to date from Upper
Aurignacian period of the paleolithic by the discoverer. This
artifact was originally carved in ivory. |

Medium figure after the Venus of Dolni Vestonice
Bronze 3.5 inches long.
$65 |
The
medium figure is inspired by an intriguing set of artifacts
found originally in 1925 by Absolon in the Vestonice deposit in
Czechoslovakia. This most celebrated Venus was modeled in a
clay mixed with pulverized bone. The fracture lines in these figures
appear to have occurred during firing and some modern archeologists have
speculated that these obviously skilled ceramists may have intentionally
fractured these figurines, possibly in a ritual of divination. While
we may never know the real motivation of their makers, still we can marvel
at the mysterious power and beauty of their creations. |
