When I first worked on this piece I had in mind a saber-tooth cat which appears to have lived at the same time as early humans.  Not until I saw a reconstructed skeleton of a saber tooth at the La Brea Tar Pits museum in Los Angeles did I realize these dramatic cats had very short tails!  Teeth or Tail....what a dilemma.  I finally opted for the wonderful long tail of the North American lion because the role it played in the overall design of the piece.
